Holiday crafts

I haven't been able to get very much of my own crafting in this holiday season, but Kaia and I have been doing fun projects together. Michelle of Green Kitchen gave me an entire mixing bowl full of buttons and we've been putting them to good use.

I got the idea for these snowflakes from someone on Sewing Mamas and we've been making a few and a time here and there. A little glitter glue makes them quite festive.

I also picked up a knitting kit at JoAnn on sale. It has several plastic frames for knitting and the smallest one makes a great i-cord. Kaia picked up the knitting part in about 20 minutes and it took one more session of figuring out the winding before she was able to do it completely on her own. We're knitting a tree garland inspired by Soulemama, though ours is washable wool with tinsel. We keep the little bin in the living room and we each do some knitting (knitting on a spool like this is called corking) when we feel like it and our tail is growing longer and longer.

I was really impressed at how quickly Kaia caught on and could do the entire thing herself, although occasionally she gets tangled up and needs a little help. She also doesn't quite get the idea of taking the yarn ball with her when she goes to another room, so occasionally we find it draped on the furniture and winding around the corner into the kitchen.

I hope we'll be done in time for Xmas, but we can always work on it into the New Year and put it on the tree next year.

Avalon was in dire need of new jammies, so I got 2 pairs done. Another 2 pairs are in varying stages on the sewing table, along with a shirt that Kaia requested.

Mugging for the camera

Another basic Olivia dress, super soft baby rib knit, fold over elastic neckline. I loved this print when I first saw it, and it seemed just right for a little summer dress. Poor Avalon is PJ-less, so I think I'll make her some jammies from the leftovers.

There's something really magical about the final seam before the finishing work. I love it when an actual garment suddenly emerges out of the pile of fabric. These are lounge pants for Michelle of Green Kitchen, since she likes mushrooms and I thought the print was fun.

Ignore the rip in the couch, it's hard to have nice furniture when you live with a jumping monkey!

I love this little dress pattern, it's twirlier than a t-shirt dress, doesn't require gathering or a zipper, and makes little girls happy.

Pants for Carlo

Pants for Carlo
Originally uploaded by Sara Homan
Carlo is one of my favorite baby boys in my life. I made these pants from leftover red stretch corduroy that I had bought for pants for Kaia. Michelle (Green Kitchen) loves mushrooms and I hit her up for a strip of these to finish off the pants. I only hope they still fit Carlo after all these months of sitting unfinished on my sewing table. The other nice thing about making stuff for Carlo is that he eventually outgrows things and Avalon gets to wear them. ;)

andrew outfit

Originally uploaded by Sara Homan.
I made this outfit back in March for Andrew's 3rd birthday, he didn't really want to model for me though. Raglan from KSFT with cute dog fabric I think I also got at sewzannes.com, pants are a wide leg pajama pattern, McCalls 4242, which I love and use all the time for easy peasy pants. The gorgeous wide wale corduroy came from the remnant table at Beverlys.

Welcome to my sewing blog

I mostly sew clothes for my girls, here's where all my sewing and craft blogging goes. Mostly I am focused on sewing right now, but I also make candles, herbal salves, little felt people, tie dye, hand dyed yarn, anything else that catches my fancy. I would definitely classify my stuff as "crafting", I don't have an artist's eye for color and patterns like some of the crafty bloggers out there, but I love making things with my hands and seeing how they come out.
I've been on a crazy fabric buying binge lately, maybe I'll post some of my new fabrics and you can help me figure out what to do with them.

Avie's outgrown this already, sniff.

Kaia wanted a black dress like Kiki from "Kiki's Delivery Service". Black velour, black fold over elastic at neckline. Pattern is "Olivia" underdress without hood from Farbenmix. , I forgot to add seam allowance when I traced and I added 2" to the length, but it fits perfectly.
Oh, and I did make the sock monkey pants too. Those are McCalls 4242, PJ pants pattern.
